Tepe Gawra is an ancient Mesopotamian settlement in northern Iraq, near the ancient site of Nineveh and fifteen miles northeast of the modern city of Mosul. It was excavated by archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania, led by E.A. Speiser, who first discovered the site in 1927, and later, C. Bache. The excavations showed that the Tepe Gawra site was occupied from approximately 5000 B.C. to 1500 B.C. The textual records from Tepe Gawra consist of 11.85 linear feet of General Correspondence, Field Notes, Indexes and Catalogues, Field Registers, and Publications, plus Maps and Drawings. Where possible, a chronological order was imposed on the Near East records.

Tepe Gawra in northern Iraq was the site of excavations uncovering twenty-six levels of occupation spanning the years from about 5000 B.C. to 1500 B.C. This expedition was funded by the University Museum, A.S.O.R.- Baghdad, and Dropsie College in Philadelphia. Excavations took place from fall to spring, directed by E. A. Speiser (University of Pennsylvania, University Museum and A.S.O.R.- Baghdad) for the 1930-1931, 1931-1932, and 1936-1937 seasons, and by C. Bache (University Museum) for the 1932-1933, 1934-1936, and the 1937-1938 seasons. During 1933-1934, work started late because of complications due to a change in the Antiquities laws and was not represented by a separate field report.

Where possible, a chronological order was imposed on the Near East records. Photographs were retained with the documents when they directly referred to content. Otherwise, the photographic collections hold material relating to excavation, objects, and travel photographs (see standard size photograph inventory). Large maps and drawings are kept in the Oversize cases, and smaller oversize items in the Print Cabinet (see inventories).

VI. Object Control and Photo Sheets – 8 ½ x 11 inch sheets with lists of objects or photos, written in Mosul, Baghdad or Philadelphia (recapitulations) in Box 2 (file 7, 8), box 3 (file 3, 5, 6, 8, 9)
