Tamara Stech came to Philadelphia in 1963 to attend Bryn Mawr College from which she received both her B.A. and Ph.D degrees in archaeology. Her Ph.D. dissertation, completed in 1973, was written on the topic of Near Eastern archaeology. Stech worked under and in cooperation with Mechteld Mellink at Bryn Mawr during her studies and early career. She was among the first scholars to have been trained in both the humanities and science. The Tamara Stech papers consist of six archival cartons of materials. They are organized by country and then individual sites locations. Most of the folders relate to metallurgical analysis.

Stech worked under and in cooperation with Mechteld Mellink at Bryn Mawr during her studies and early career. She was among the first scholars to have been trained in both the humanities and science.
In 1974, Stech came to the University of Pennsylvania as an assistant Professor in the Department of Material Science and Engineering. There she teamed up with Robert Maddin, Department of Anthropology at Harvard and James Muhly, Department of Oriental Studies at Penn. Stech would work and publish with these colleagues for much of her career.
Stech specialized in the metallurgy of the Near East and worked primarily in southwest Turkey. In addition, her work took her to Italy, Slovenia, Morocco, Jordan, Israel, Syria, Mesopotamia, Laos and Thailand. From 1987 to 1992, Stech edited the Journal of Archaeomaterials. She, along with her colleagues Maddin and Muhly were recognized with the Pomerance Award for Scientific Excellence to Archaeology in 1994. In addition to her other duties, Stech served as secretary of her alma mater, Bryn Mawr.
Maddin, Muhly and Stech wrote voluminously for scientific journals, assisted in MASCA research and contributed to University publications including Expedition Magazine. Their papers included "How the Iron Age Began", Tin in the Ancient Near East: Old Questions and New Finds", "The Cape Gelidonya Shipwreck and the Bronze Age Metals Trade in the Eastern Mediterranean. Stech also co-authored with Vincent C. Pigott and Rachel Maxwell-Hyslop.
Stech contributed to radio station WHYY. One of her lectures was titled "Out of the Fiery Furnace: The Story of Metal and Man" discussing the transition from bronze to iron in weapons, tools, and artifacts.
Stech retired and relocated to Vermont in 1996 to care for her husband. She returned to the Philadelphia area in 2010 and settled in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. Tamara Stech passed away in 2016.

The Tamara Stech papers were gifted to the Museum in 2017 by her son, Caleb Wheeler. The papers were reviewed twice prior to formal processing. The first review eliminated duplications and reprint of material not related to Stech or her co-authors. The second review organized the materials by location of the work which became the guiding force for the development of series.
The Tamara Stech papers consist of six archival cartons of materials. They are organized by country which form twelve of the series. Within each series the folders are group by site locations in alphabetical order. Two additional series contain material related to the USA-USSR Exchange of 1993 which consist of copies of the papers presented by Penn and other scientists from the USA and those from the USSR. A series of miscellaneous papers complete the group.
The organization within each series is straightforward with the majority of the materials related to metallurgical analysis. There is one area of overlap, a notebook titles "Turkey-Sardonia" which is with the materials from Turkey.
The photographs were maintained within the location grouping. They include prints, negatives and some contact sheets. The photos were partially processed. The negatives remain unprocessed to date.
