The Coin Collection records consist of 1.5 linear feet of correspondence, financial records, accession materials, deaccession materials, and index cards. The coin collection was originally curated by Robert Brock and Stewart Culin from 1892-1902. Portions of the coin collection were later deaccessioned by the museum, beginning in the 1950s.

Robert Coleman Hall Brock (July 26, 1861 – August 9, 1906) was a Philadelphian attorney. Brock had many interests in life, evidenced by his membership in various organizations including the board of the Franklin Institute, the Archaeological Society of Pennsylvania, the Union League, and the American Philosophical Society. He had a particular interest in coins and numismatics and in 1882 became a member of the Numismatic Society.

Brock served on the Board of Managers at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology from 1899 to 1902. During this time, he worked with Stewart Culin to build the museums coin collection. Brock donated parts of his personal coin collection and worked with sellers around the world on the museums behalf to purchase coins.

The collecting scope of the museum was broader then than today. The coin collection spent a number of years in museum storage, without a curator to oversee them. In the 1940s, the museum began the process of deaccessioning the modern European and American currencies in the collection. The process gained steam in the 1950s and many coins were sold at that time. The 1970s brought additional sales as well. Ethnic and ancient coinage and currencies were retained by the museum.

The records from the Coin Collection consist of three series: Collection Accession Records, Collection Deaccession and Sales Records, and Coin Collection index cards. The accession records cover correspondence, bill of sales, and other records documenting the creation of the coin collection under Robert Brock and Stewart Culin. The deaccession and sales records cover two time spans (1940-1952, 1973-1975) and the records describing the deaccessioning of various components of the coin collection. The index cards are sets of cards describing the coins, compiled in the early 1900s. The descriptions do not include Penn Museum object numbers.
