Description | Wooden. Spade-shaped, with hemispherical malar prominences. The huge lips frame a crescent-shaped opening; they are holed to take pegs representing teeth. The mask is blackened, and this color overlaid with white for the eyes and lips and a red ring round the cheek prominences. A raphia fiber fringe crosses the forehead. One of the properties of the Kawso "secret" society, whose principal function is now to provide amusement in the form of public dancing and conjuring tricks. The head of the society is the principal dancer and "magician". |
