Description | Obv. 寛永通寳 Kan'ei Tsūhō Rev. 文 Bun. "Tori-Sumi" (gathered endings) sen. The inscription on the back on either side is written in a running hand and is written in reverse. These types of coins are said to be made from the dregs of the melted Daibutsu (Great Buddha) housed at the Buddhist temple Hoko-ji (方広寺) and destroyed in an earthquake on June 16, 1662 CE in the Kyoto area. The coins with only the Bun (文) were also made from the Daibutsu but the inscription on the back of this coin indicates it was one of the last few made. Shin Kanei. |
