Description

Barrel-shaped body, bulging neck; one loop handle shoulder to neck. Red clay, human face on neck, round eyes and arms in low relief

Face-neck vessel. Narrow-necked jug with an oblong body, cylindrical neck, rounded rim, 1 strap handle extending from the neck to the body, and a flat base. There is a modeled human effigy face on the neck with arms and belly button on the body. The effigy features are highlighted by painted decoration in white and brown. There appears to be a smoothed finish on the exterior and a scraped finish on the interior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. Evidence of usewear includes residue on the interior and staining. There is a large shiny black patch on the exterior bottom. The interior is also stained from use. The catalogue number is written in black ink. Black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "2754."
