Description

A writing board (종이분판) consisting of two wooden ends with accordion style paper in between. This would have been used to practice writing without the need for using paper as the middle section is covered with a mixture of lime poweder, oil, and glue that allows for erasing the writing after each use.The writing would also go away on its own after a while. This was particularly useful and economical when the price for paper was high. There is a tag on the back that reads: "paper slate pun pan, Korea Rec'd by purchase, coll by Stewart Culin". The term pun pan is likley bunpan 분판 which is the term for a writing board. Since this writing board has paper inside it's usually referred to as a jong-i bunpan (종이분판).
