Effigy Vessel

Wide mouthed vessel with an effigy-anthropomorphic body, bulging collar, rounded rim, no handles, and a flat base. The vessel is shaped like a seated human figure with hands bound behind his back. The figure has arms, legs, ears, nose, eyes, and mouth. The vessel is painted delineating the features of the figure and with geometric patterns on the neck and body in black, white, red, and brown?. There appears to be a burnished finish on the exterior and a smoothed finish on the interior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange and gray in color. Fireclouding is present on the base. The bottom of the vessel appears dark gray and porous, possibly from overfiring. The catalogue number is written on the interior of the base. Black ink on the interior of the base reads: "1795."
