Effigy Vessel

Shape of mountain cat, nearly cylindrical neck rising from back of cat which stands upon 4 legs. The forelegs are also painted on the jar as are 2 tails suggesting that skins are intended, not the real cat

Narrow-necked jar/bottle with an effigy-zoomorphic body, cylindrical neck, rounded rim, no handles, and a footed base. No molded/modeled additions. the vessel is shaped like a jaguar. The vessel is shaped like a jaguar with a red and white slip and detailed painted decoration. The felid figure is painted white with half circles all over painted in black. The neck is red with a band of geometric design in white, red, and black. The details of the face, including the eyes, nose, and mouth, are painted on. There appears to be a burnished finish on the exterior and a smoothed finish on the interior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. The catalogue number is written on the object in black ink on the bottom of the base. Black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "970."
