Description

Sotoba 卒都婆 “stupa memorial tablets” for each of the lineage of leaders (monshu 門主) of the Honganji 本願寺 sect of the True Pure Land school (Jōdo Shinshū 淨土真宗 ) Japan, including the founders Shinran 親鸞 and Hōnen 法然, and Prince Shōtoku and Nāgārjuna. Each tablet bears the name and the date of death. Shinran appears with the title “Kenshin Daishi” given to him by the Meiji Emperor in 1876, so these tablets must have been made after that date. Generations 4, 14-17, and 19-20 of the lineage seem to be missing.
