Description | Wicker. Decorated in black chevrons. The form and construction of these shields is in general similar to that of the Azande shields (cf. AF2841-2843), though they are generally longer and, proportionately, slenderer. The decorative design either modifies considerably the typical Azande "cross", or departs from it altogether, the elements (stripes, chevrons, rhombs, etc.) being often disposed with less regard to a central unity. See AF 2838, 2840, 1716 etc. and cf. Johnston, George Grenfell...... pp. 769-770. The similar shields in Pub. Roy. Ethn. Mus. II, 2, bear the attributions ranging from the lower Ubangi to the Lomami and Kasai. |
