Description

In the Spring of 1894 Dr. Landis witnessed at Chemulpo (Incheon) a festival intended to propitiate the spirits of the hills. The participants were masked boys, thirteen in number. The performance took place in the open air in a roped off inclosure, around which the spectators stood. At the back was a pavilion, beneath which were placed an altar and an image. In front of this were arranged six musicians. Dr. Landis was so much impressed with the performance that he had a very careful painting made of the dance by a native artist. Other maskers in the picture represent singing girls, a monkey, and personages resembling genii and demons. See 17680 for the mask depicted in this painting.
