Description | White oak splints. Purple, a little red and natural. Native dyes. Twill weave. Rectangular shape. Handle over top. "Used to leech out wood ashes in making lye to use as soda in baking corn bread. Basket filled half full of clean ashes, water poured in and drip through sieve bottom caught in pail. A teaspoonful used to about a quart of corn meal to cause bread to rise as substitute for soda. Also used in leeching ashes to make soap." |
