Description | Blade is old, of grey stone, chipped, only slightly polished; cross section. Hafting is crude; coarse braided sennit. Handle is elaborately carved; appears to be quite modern, and although the design elements are typically Marquesas, their placement and execution suggest that handle may have been carved by a European. Upper part has two openings formed by the joining of the backs of the heads of two half figures which face the top and the bottom sides. Grasp tapers in toward the middle but expands again at the bottom where the butt is carved with two heads whose backs are joined leaving an open space above and below. Carving designs are quite shallow. |
