Description | Black. With a face at base of neck which is lacking. Animal and peanut on body? Face-neck vessel. Narrow-necked jug with a globular body, effigy-anthropomorphic neck, missing rim, 1 strap handle extending from the neck to the body, and a ring base/foot base. The vessel has a modeled/molded face on the neck including ears, eyes, nose, There is an modeled animal on the side of the body and two raised lines on the sides (peanuts?). There are incised lines and punctate dots in a band around the neck and decorating the raised features. There appears to be a smoothed finish on the exterior. The vessel was likely fired in a reducing atmosphere as the surface is black and the interior is gray in color. Fireclouding is present on the body. The catalogue number is written on the object in black ink on the bottom of the base. Black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "814." |
