| Description | Gourd penis sheath (wabot, type beren wabot) (beren = gourd). Brown gourd, tip added with seizing. Waist cord attached to seizings at base. Gourd was grown especially for this use: curved shape due to training as the gourd was growing. These gourds grown in northern most areas. This type of penis sheath worn on ceremonial occasions. The owner (and maker) wore this often at ceremonies at which women offered themselves to him. Now married, he was sad about selling this piece, with its fond memories, to Kirsch. Made by Kukweng Yacobus, Komdan clan, Ninanti village, Irian Jaya, living in Dome refugee camp. Purchased from maker 1/27/89. |
