Description

Red Ware, flattened base irregular body; neck with raised ring, one loop handle body to neck (missing). Large ugly face on upper body, arms in high relief. Plain. Small.

Face-neck vessel. Narrow-necked jug with an effigy-anthropomorphic body, bulging neck, rounded rim, 1 strap handle extending from the neck to the body, and a flat base. The vessel has a modeled/molded face and arms on the body with very large eyes, snub nose, and mouth with suggestion of teeth. There appears to be a burnished finish on the exterior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange and buff in color. Fireclouding is present on the body. The catalogue number is written on the bottom of the base and black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "688."
