Description

Natural color bark cloth with rubbed rectilinear pattern made from pattern block (kupesi) and dark brown freehand over painting. Man’s garment (malo) (Peale) or Tongan tapa (ngatu) (Kaeppler). Acquired during the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1842) by Titian R. Peale. “Tapa dress [garment]. (Man’s).” on Peale list.
