Description | Mouth, neck and handle missing.; some wear about foot. Hard smooth orange-buff clay (I). Neck slightly offset from shoulder. Consistent, fairly smooth black glaze with somewhat metallic sheen. Reserved: lower wall and stem, and whole of underside. None of reserved surfaces is reddened. Band of black on outer face of foot. The neck was decorated with tongues of which the bottoms remain. Around the shoulder is a necklace of pendants composed of broad strokes with two dots below, the pendants and dots are rendered in orange over white. Below is an orange band which curves below the handle root. On the body, reticulate decoration between bands, all white. Below is a further band of orange. Probably about 320 B.C.In more recent times, the vase had an alien griffin-head attached; the pastiche was dismantled in 1982. (From Green, 1986, CVA). |
