Description | Sommerville: Chalcedony - Plato the Greek Philosopher and poet. Two butterfly wings emblematic of the beauty and gayete of his verses. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case L. Vermeule: Chalcedony. Cameo. (Unmounted). Filleted bust of an elderly bearded type of the Vth B.C. facing to left. Two butterfly wings in the hair above the ear. Sommerville suggests Plato, but ancient gems occassionally show Dionysos-Sabazios with the attribute of the butterfly. Neo-Classic, copying an ancient stone. |
