Sommerville: Sardonyx. Seneca the philosopher born at Cordoba, Spain. He was in Rome during the earlier years of the reign of Augustus. He was a man of prodigious memory, powerful in his rhetoric and eloquence. He returned to his native country and passed many years of his married life there but went to Rome during the reign of Tiberius and died there. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case U.
