Description | Wooden Katsina doll. The face is bisected vertically into halves painted red and white (originally green). Plant symbols are painted above and below the eyes. The top of the head has feathers attached. An elaborate, tableta headdress is attached to the head painted black, green, white, yellow and red. The headdress has corn, flower and rainbow imagery and has feathers attached. The body is painted black with a kilt painted over the waist. This figure is the Sio Hemis (or Sio Humis) Katsina, borrowed from the Zuni. (Colton, H. 1959 #155, Wright, B., 1973 #216) |
