Description

Flat base, wide collar, expanding neck, wide mouth. Man on side. Phallic vessel

Wide mouthed vessel with an effigy-anthropomorphic body, no neck/collar, missing rim, no handles, and a flat base. The vessel has a human form on the side with a face and arms holding a phallus. The face has ears, nose, eyes, and pursed mouth. The pot was likely red slipped with painted decoration in black and white. There appears to be a smoothed finish on the exterior and a smoothed finish on the interior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. Evidence of usewear includes soot on the exterior and chips/losses. The catalogue number is written in black ink on the interior of the vessel. Pencil on the interior of the vessel reads: "1601."
