Description | Pottery: red-white-black. Convex base, sharp equator, low convex top; with stirrup neck handle and jaguar face at top. Stirrup necked jug with a carinated body, no neck/collar, rounded rim, 1 stirrup handle on the body, and a rounded base. The vessel has a molded jaguar face on the stirrup spout with eyes, mouth, and teeth. The vessel has a red slip with painted geometric designs in black and white. The face of the jaguar is painted with white spots and black lines. There appears to be a burnished finish on the exterior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. Evidence of usewear includes surface attrition on the bottom/base. The catalogue number is written on the object in black ink on the bottom of the base. Pencil mark on the bottom of the base reads: "1879." |
