Description | Russet iron 8-plate helmet with vertical ridges and raised rivets (tetsu sabiji hachi ken za-boshi suji-tate-bachi kabuto). The front and back plate each have two columns of bullet-shaped rivets with chrysanthemum washers. The other six plates each have one column of the same types of rivets and washers totaling 70 rivets across the entire helmet bowl. A simple, three-stage fixture (tehen-no-kanamono) sits atop the helmet bowl shaped to look like chrysanthemum petals. The protective metal visor (mabizashi) is attached to the helmet bowl with three large, flattened rivets. The visor is covered with textured leather painted over with black lacquer. The underside of the visor is painted with red lacquer. The intact helmet lining (ukebari) is made of blue cloth with a long purple helmet cord attached. A five lame, ko-manju style neck guard (shikoro) is attached to the helmet bowl, though most of the rivets are missing. Each lame is made of a single iron plate (ita-mono) covered with textured leather and lacquered black. Lames are connected to one another with dark green silk lacing in the sugake-odoshi style. Two forward-facing wings (fukigaeshi) emerge from the top lame of the neck guard. The fukigaeshi bear no crests and, like the rest of the lames, are covered in a black-lacquered, textured leather. |
