Description

Sommerville: Sardonyx. Dionysus (Bacchus) in his youth. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case W.

Vermeule: Sardonyx. Cameo. (Unmounted). Vine-wreathed draped bust of a young man facing to right. Sommerville identifies him as Dionysos, but the features suggest the gem was copied after some ancient portrait of Hadrians favorite, Antinous as Dionysos. Neo-Classic, in very good style.
