Description | Complete but for chip on rim and one broken "arm" of handle. Stain on bottom. Much of painted dec. very worn. Handmade shallow bowl with high "horned" handle in shape of woman with upraised arms (?). Base flat; wall short convex; rim flaring. Flat band handle in riased loop attached at rim and GD. Black and red dec. in geometric designs over soft creamy slip. Red used for emphasis. Wide black band around base. in center black 8 spoked wheel pattern. On lower wall 3 broad triple lined black zig zags with apex of lowest line filled in as triangle with "feet" extending from it base. Between zig zags are 3 groups of 3 short vertical lines pendent from lowest band above. On GD, black, red, black bands. R and L of handle, wide black oblique stripes (lotus). On interior central floor, finely done black conjoined birds. On rim, black, red, black bands. On handle back, widely spaced ladder pattern. On front, solid black at base; then 2 flat discs each side with black border and central dot; small false hole between them (produces bump behind), red border with black dotsl black line above. Then, between red bands, area of finely done black oblique lattice filled with lozenges. Above this on front and back, "arms" entirely black. "Eye" are discs similar to those below but larger. Medium fabric. Fine clay, fired orange red and buff (in thinner parts), with friable buff slip. Slip fired orange red on interior; worn off bottom leaving clay surface. Soft powdery appearance. Some fine mica. |
