Description | Vermeule: Chrysoprase, cameo cut gem, unmounted. Oak-wreathered bust of Zeus (Zeus / Jupiter Aegiochus) facing, an aegis over his left shoulder. Considered one of the major surviving ancient cameos by Sommerville. This gem was termed a "modern forgery" by A. Furtwangler. it is based on a large ancient cameo (Sommerville publication states aegis over shoulder; original card incorrectly states eagle) |
