Description | Sommerville: Oriental Sardonyx Claudius, 4th Emperor of rome. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case L. Vermeule: Oriental Sardonyx. Cameo. (Unmounted). Laureate bust of the Emperor Claudius to right. Sommerville states that this is a contemporary cameo, but the style seems good work of the middle ages, perhaps after an ancient model such as the large cameo of the Emperor Claudius in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. |
