Rim Sherd

Sherd consisting of side of pot from base to rim. Straight side slants outward from flat base. Cord marked with bottom section smooth. Inside of rim has two parallel incised lines. Top edge of rim is cord marked. Mottled orange and black. Flat bottomed forms with simple cord marked decoration which is smoothed over near the base are common in the Early Jomon Period. However, basic unadorned cooking pots continued to be made even in the Late Jomon Period. Thus it is very difficult to assign this example to any specific period based on decoration and form alone.
