Description

War Helmet entitled "Murrelet." Conical, wooden hat base carved from wood with a wooden figure of a seated Murrelet bird attached on top. The bird is attached to the helmet with a leather thong. Three rows of six dark brown tufts of hair protrude from the wings and tail. Abalone shell inlay decorates the bird's eyes and wings along with painted and carved formline designs on the wings, back, and tail. The bird is primarily painted black with details in white, red, and green. The hat itself is conical with an outwardly flaring rim. The lower half is painted green while the upper half is carved in low relief with figures and faces painted green, brown, white, and brownish red. Hide straps are attached to the interior to affix the helmet to the wearer's head.
