Description | Globular body. flaring neck. Two vertical loop handles on body. Painted with pelicans. Painting in red-black-white; neck missing Narrow-necked jar/bottle with a globular body, missing neck, missing rim, 2 strap handles on the body, and a flat base. No molded/modeled additions. The vessel is painted around the shoulder with an orange background and animals (pelicans?) in red, purple, black, and white. Underneath the painted shoulder is a band around the center of the vessel depicting bird footprints in black and white. There appears to be a burnished finish on the exterior and a smoothed finish on the interior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. The catalogue number is written on the body near the base. Black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "1856." |
