Description

Sommerville: Antique enamel. Contest between an Eagle and a Serpent. Antique Pastes, Case ZZZ.

Vermeule: Glass paste, imitating Onyx. Intaglio. (Unmounted) An eagle struggling with a serpent. Graeco-Roman, the subject a very popular one in all periods of ancient art back to the IVth century silver coins of Elis in the Pelopponesus.
