Description

Merchant's hat resembling a camp hat (jingasa) used by soldiers. This paper mache hat is relatively flat with a slightly raised area in the center. The exterior is coated in brown lacquer and finished with a rippled texture (tataki nuri) that creates ridges of black lacquer showing through the brown. The design features a raised relief of a dragon curling around the entire surface. Gold clouds lined in red dot areas around the dragon. In the center, a three-sword design is painted in gold. The interior is lacquered red and remnants of the lining (ukebari) remain, though the lining itself is lost. A metal crest representing a tool is attached to the front of the hat. The crest is of an encircled diamond shape split into four smaller diamonds each with an even smaller diamond in their centers. This is the family crest (mon) of the Minamoto clan called Yotsume (four eyes).
