Description | Boat model of teakwood, from the Dangs forest of South Gujarat. Bottom of boat is painted white, with a continuous red strip accented at bow and stern with blue and green. The outsides around the upper deck are painted white, and the top of the insides are painted blue. The deck completely covers the boat, and has three square prominences that are white with blue outline. The two part mast is secured with yellow nylon cord with small black weights. The boat is equipped with a small anchor and fixed rudder. This is a model dhangi, a large cargo vessel of traditional Undian design, seldom seen today. Sleek lines enabled it to move rapidly under sail. The full size ship is 80 feet long overall, 70 feet long at keel, 22 to 24 feet wide. Smaller dhangi vessels are built primarily in Salaya, on the Saurashtra coast of the Gulf of Kutch. |
