Description | Carved of fairly heavy wood. Figure is quite stylized. Face resembles the masks of 58-17-55 to 59 (see card for reference). Arms drawn up and back of head, hands flexed back down toward body and are carved to resemble bird's heads or beaks. Legs are merely stumps. Three hook-like projections carved out of body; points extend almost up to chin. Painted in red, black, yellow and white, each portion treated as a separate design area. Back has a lug carved between the shoulders, and a strip of bark cloth was used to suspend it. Could this be a suspension hook? (Bad crack up the back). |
