Description | Bell shaped object of heavy cast bronze with nearly straight sides tapering slightly and rounded off at the top. It has a loop for suspension at the top and a hole just below to hang clapper. rim is slightly offset. Smooth lt. to dk. green patina, rubbed off in spots to reveal reddish layer beneath, encrusted near rim with a whitish deposit (carbonates?). rough thick patches of reddish corrosion at top and inside; remnant of an iron clapper? Partially cut through vertically from rim with saw or file, probably anciently. Irregular hole corroded through side. Metal sample taken. |
