Description | Sommerville: Chalcedony Odenathus and Zenobia Queen of Palmyra. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case D. Vermeule: Mediterranean. 1600-1699 Post Classical. Chalcedony; gold cameo. (modern gilt pendant setting] Half figured busts of a bearded philosopher type man and a lady facing right. He wears a fillet and a cloak with shoulder strap, the former draped loosely about his shoulders. She wears a fillet an a himation. Identified by Sommerville as Odenathes and Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra. Perhaps inspired by some Hellenistic portrait cameo. |
