Description

The wooden hilt is rounded for the grip, the forward end of which is encircled by two brass rings; in front of these the guard (carved in one piece with the grip) which originally consisted of a short cross-piece, is broken off short on both sides. The hilt extends further forward, this portion slotted to receive the broad tang of the iron blade. The insertion is reinforced with a binding of brass wire. Forward of this the blade is out into a pair of points directed backwards and slightly outwards. In front of these the blade increases gradually in width to near the point, into which it tapers more sharply. The scabbard is of lizard skin, oblong, the lower portion having the sides incurved. At the top there is a brass loop for suspension by a sling. See 8716-8721, 9758 (Fang, Ogowe River).
