Description | Three pieces of lead bronze (cf. analysis), two of which are joining fragments, which originally were fastened together by two iron rivets. (c) is broken off corner of (b). When fitted together the two pieces seem to be whole on one side, anciently broken along other. On outside faces are heavy grooves across width which are beveled to give a stepped effect; on one side these steps are partially hatched on the diagonal. This is not likely to be decoration since these pieces seem too rough to have been showing on the outside of whatever they were part of. On the hatched side one iron rivet is preserved projecting almost 1 cm above the surface. Perhaps this was a weighted sheathing for the handle of a weapon or tool anciently covered with wood or ivory. |
