Description | Sommerville: Chalcedony-Onyx - Hercules and Deianira - the subject of this cameo remains in doubt to me for a long time on account of the child in the oak tree. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case J. Vermeule: Chalcedony-Onyx. Cameo. (Gilt pendent mount; broken in three pieces and repaired.) Herakles confronting a seated female with a child beside her, two children in a tree in center. A subject identified by Sommerville as Herakles and Deiniara (?). The compositon, carved in a very high relief, is 16th century work perhaps carved in northern Europe. |
