Description | Wood. Face is painted red, with eye (of shell, fixed with pegs) nose and crocodile figure, nasal projection trimmed in black and silver (commercial paint). Head, sides and part of projection are coated with Nassa and Conus shells. Ornament of curved boar's tusks wired through nose. Two tassels of white, black and red cloth tied on upper part of one side, one ornament on lower end of other side. Mask represents a supernatural clan ancestor and is fixed on the front of a masked figure during the initation dance of lower grades of men's societies. |
