Description | Flat lid with slightly convex edge. Medium textured, reddish yellow (5 YR 7/6) clay, with decoration in black paint. Handmade. Wiped with water. Groups of two diagonal lines on edge, continuing across top of lid. One side preserved; handle not preserved. Comments: MM I-III. For comments on the Middle Minoan Dark-on-light Style see MS4638.1. Lids of this type are descended from EM III lids like MS4615.34 and are common in eastern Crete (see The Cretan Collection, vol. I, nos. 41-42). The decoration is related to that of a lid illustrated by Maraghiannis and Karo 1907-21: II, pl. 22, no. 1 (Pseira). |
