| Description | Woodblock-printed Mongolian text on paper despite the stamp that says it is Manchu. A Chinese title appears at right margin as Wenshu zhi 文殊志 "The Record of the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī", with page number (上三十七, i.e. printed from the opposite side of the same block as 29-96-818A). It is stamped with the description: “Print from ‘Original’ MANCHU PRAYER BOARD. These Manchu Prayer Boards are from the Great Temples at JEHOL, in Southwestern Manchuria,” and with a Chinese date of November 1922. However there text is not Manchu but rather Mongolian. Two impressions of Chinese-style seals both read “Ba Ruande 巴軟德”. This was the Chinese name of the dealer Edward Barrett who was collecting materials of this kind for sale to US collections in the 1920s. A museum “received” stamp has the date 1924. |
