Description | Probably made for sale as waste-basket. (Flat bottom, flaring sides). Warp of hazel twigs; weft-split pine roots; decoration of bear grass and maidenhair fern stems. Twined, incl: plain, overlay (half-twist), openwork (parallel, crossed, and zigzag), and diagonal twining. Some 3-strand braiding. Openwork twined bottom (hazel wefts) like Hupa Salmon "dishes." Reinforced rim wrapped with beargrass and pine root alternately (like Hupa baby cradles). 4 narrow bands of plain twining with overlay decoration. Top one: glossy light beargrass overlay - design background. Tan (pine root) triangles pendant from glossy black (fern overlay) line. Second and third bands: same design background. Tan triangles alternately above and below uneven black line. Bottom one: sawtooth effect; top half light with grass overlay, remainder tan of regular root weft. 3 wide bands of openwork twining separating above 4 bands. Combination of crossed and zigzag. Very narrow band of parallel openwork twining between rim and first solid band. Solid bands bounded by row of 3-strand braid and row of diagonal twining. |
