Description | Carved from one piece of wood, except the uppermost part with rounded top, in which five ornamental notches are cut, and incurving sides; this is dowelled on to the top of the sheild. The rest consists of three panels, the upper decreasing in width towards the top with slightly incurved sides; the middle panel, with round boss, is of about the same width at top and bottom, having the sides slightly incurved, the lowest panel is rounded off at the bottom. The middle panel is marked off above and below by narrow strips of palmwood tied on with strips of cane. Eight strips of cane are tied on across the obverse and reverse faces of the shield above the boss and eight more below, the wood being pierced to receive the cane lashings. The decoration, of heavily incised lines, is simple, resembling that of the left-hand shield in fig. 52, Cole, Wild Tribes of Davao District. A hand grip in releief and , behind the boss, counter-sunk, is carved from the solid wood. Cf. the Mandaya shield, 29-58-94, and the Bagobo shields, P 2977. |
