Description | Wooden Katsina doll. The face is painted yellow with vertical, red lines indicating hair. The hair is painted black and tied up in two whorls on either side of the head. Two horizontal bands in blue and red cover the mouth and a black, painted beard hangs below. A painted blanket is wrapped around the body and a black dress is worn underneath. A gourd is held in one hand. This figure is the Hemis Maiden (Hemis Kachin Mana). Made by Jimmy Nequatewa. (Colton, H. 1959 #133, Wright, B., 1973 #215) |
