Description | Red ware. Incurved rim. painted with face indicated by applied eyes and nose and mouth. Six nodes projecting around circumference. Wide mouthed vessel with a squat-globular body, no neck/collar, rounded rim, no handles, and a flat base. The vessel has a modeled face on the body with applied nose, eyes, ears, and mouth. There are also spike-like protrusions at regular intervals around the body. The features of the face are painted red and white while the body is painted with red and white vertical stripes. There appears to be a burnished finish on the exterior and a scraped finish on the interior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. The catalogue number is written on the bottom of the base and black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "1861." |
