Description

Pear-shaped body, tapering neck, two vertical loop handles on body. Pottery: painted with face on neck.

Face-neck vessel. Narrow-necked jar/bottle with an ovate body, effigy-anthropomorphic neck, flattened rim, 2 strap handles on the body, and a flat base. The vessel is painted with red and white lines in a zigzag pattern. The face is modeled with incised lines around the eyes. The vessel is painted red, with white around the eyes. There appears to be a smoothed finish on the exterior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. Fireclouding is present on the body. There are very wide burnish lines, possibly just smoothed. The interior of the neck was pushed out to form the face. Evidence of usewear includes surface attrition on the bottom/base. The catalogue number is written on the object in black ink. No other numbers are visible on the object.
