Description | Wooden Katsina doll carved from one piece of wood. The face is painted pink with triangular, hachured areas below the eyes. The eyes are rectangular with one outlined in light blue and the other in dark blue. The chin has multicolored lines radiating down from around the mouth. An elaborate, semicircular, tableta headdress is attached to the head painted yellow, blue and red and with carved feathers attached. A painted shawl is draped over the shoulders over top of carved feathers arranged vertically. This figure is a male Salako (Salako Taka) Katsina. (Colton, H. 1959 #117, Wright, B., 1973 #248) |
